Driving Licences and what you need to know
Applying for a provisional licence
You need to get a Provisional Licence before you can drive a car. Talk to your local Weelz team member now for full details
First things first, before you can even get into a car and start learning to drive, you have to get hold of a provisional driving licence
To apply, you must complete the application form D1 that's available from either the 'Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency DVLA form ordering service', or from your local Post Office
It takes about 4 weeks for your application to be processed and for your licence to be sent to you - so if you want to start learning as soon as you hit 17, make sure you apply early!

If you have an old style paper licence you also need to sign it. You can get an application form and explanatory notes from most Post Offices, or you can get them online from the DVLA
Read the application form carefully and make sure that you comply with the requirements for getting photos signed by an appropriate person
The licence usually takes just a week or two to arrive. It consists of two parts - the photo card and the paper counterpart. Any time you need to produce your driving licence you must produce both parts
If you change your name or address, you need to send in your licence to get it changed. There is normally no charge for this. If you lose your driving licence and need a replacement then you will normally be charged
If you have an International Driving Permit from overseas which lasts for one year, you will still need to get a UK provisional licence before you can take your test. Note that an International Permit only allows you to drive while you are a visitor to this country
If you have a permanent address in this country you may not normally be considered to be a visitor
If you lose your photo card just before your driving test you will not be able to take the test unless you can get a replacement before the test. If you just lose the paper "counterpart" you should be able to complete a form that the Examiner will have with him at the time of your test
When you pass your test you can apply for a full driving licence. You are advised do this straight away and must do it before a year expires. With newer licences, the Examiner may keep your provisional licence and you will automatically be sent your full licence

Test advice
Your examiner will explain how the test works. You'll be asked to start the car and move away. During your test you'll most likely complete the following:
- two of the three manoeuvres
- an emergency stop
- the reverse park or bay park
- hill start and an angled start
- general driving on the test route
Make sure you know the show me, tell me questions and answers. This will get you off to a good start. Don’t go getting minor errors before you even move off!!
Thoroughly learn the cockpit drill and go through it each time you get in the car. Make sure you do it before you move off on your test
Mirrors - learn to use them properly
Remember that the interior mirrror is made of flat glass, so it gives a 'true picture' of what's behind you at the correct distance . . . the door mirrors are made of convex glass which makes everything look smaller and further away . . . the things you see in your door mirrors may be much closer to you than you think
